Is Eyelash Regrowth Possible?

Eyelash regrowth is a very natural condition, which is fortunate because our eyelashes perform a very important function. Our eyelashes are not there to make us look more attractive, although that certainly can be the case. Our eyelashes are there to protect our eyes from foreign particles which otherwise might attach themselves to the eyeball. Eyelashes act as filters, just as the hair in our nose does. Because eyelashes play such a vital role, they seldom disappear naturally. Plucking, using false eyelashes, or disease can cause eyelashes to thin out or disappear, but in most cases once a hair is lost, it will grow back. We lose eyelashes naturally all the time, occasionally finding one on our pillow, or in our soup. But this is a natural occurrence. It happens with all of the hair on our body.

Like any other hair on the body, individual eyelash growth depends upon the health of the eyelash follicle. If a follicle for whatever reason becomes severely damaged, it may no longer be able to produce hair. If you pluck out an eyelash, the follicle will usually recover, and the eyelash will grow back. Repeated plucking however could damage the follicle to the point where a hair will no longer be produced. Attaching false eyelashes for the purpose of having longer looking eyelashes can sometimes result in damaged eyelash follicles.

Eyelashes Grow To A Predetermined Length - A mistake many make, is attempting to treat their eyelashes with lotions or cremes in the hopes of making the lashes grow longer. Before we first see the light of day, our eyelashes have grown, and they are programmed to grow to a predetermined length, and no longer. Some people have long, luxuriant eyelashes. Others do not. Some have very stubby eyelashes, and if that's what you have, that's what you have.

There really isn't anything on the market that will make eyelashes grow, in spite of what you may read. Or, if there are, such products have yet to be scientifically proven. It's important re recognize this fact, plus the fact that the length of one's eyelashes is genetically set in stone. Your eyelashes will grow as long as they are programmed to grow, and not a millimeter longer. Purchasing any product designed to grow eyelashes or make existing eyelashes grow longer is a waste of money, and potentially harmful to the eyes. Any cosmetic or other treatment applied in the vicinity of the eyes should be done very cautiously, and preferably not at all.

Trimmed Eyelashes Stop Growing - There are things that can be done to promote eyelash growth and make the eyelashes as full and healthy as they are capable of being. One can apply conditioners to eyelashes, just as we apply conditioners to the hair on our scalp. Conditioners act to keep the hair soft and flexible, and not hard and brittle. Hard and brittle hair breaks off easily. Unfortunately, with eyelashes, once a hair is broken off, or cut off, it won't grow back to its normal length. It has to fall out, or be pulled out first. The new hair will then grow to the natural length. Trimming your eyelashes will not promote eyelash regrowth, nor will it promote thicker eyelashes. All it will do is give you short eyelashes, until the existing lashes are replaced by new ones.

Summary - Its best to treat your eyelashes more carefully than the other hair you have, if for no other reason than they are so close to your eyes, and are so important in protecting your eyes. Stop using any cosmetic or conditioner that causes irritation around your eyes. Petroleum jelly is one substance which can be used for conditioning your lashes that is very safe. Some vitamin-enriched lotions are also safe to use. Just don't treat your eyelashes like the hair on the scalp, where we plaster on substances in hopes hair will grow back, or the air under the armpits, where we apply other substances to make the hair go away. The eyelashes are delicate. Let eyelash regrowth occur naturally.
